Mobi-blogging.

September 22nd, 2009 Lunacite No comments

So this is a first, this entire post will have been composed ane edited on my Blackberry. I searched my office for a notepad, but failed to find anything larger than 3×5, so I activated the full docs to go suite on my mobile, since I’ve been meaning to blog, but wouldn’t be at my desk much today.

Its been a hectic month, Nate moved in till his room at the U opens, and its been really neat having him around. The house has gotten a bit messy after a couple back to back parties, we really need to take a Saturday to deep clean it. Once Nate gets into his dorm it’ll be simpler.

New roommates! Hopefully everything goes smoothly with the screener and they get to move in as planned. At the very least, my wallet won’t be as anorexically thin as it is now. It’ll be weird to be in a full house again, but definitely welcome to have some ladies around.

I had totally forgotten that TV series begin to pick up in the fall, I’ve been trying to catch up on House before I start the new season. Dexter starts this sunday, and this season looks pretty promising, Keith Carradine returns and John Lithgow joins the cast as well, and it’s always nice to see more of Julie Benz.

I think that the format on my phone is making me think this is longer than it is, and not just a series of random twitter-length posts. Not that it really matters, but I’d get more of a sense of accomplishment from typing MORE in the BlackBerry than less. I don’t think I’m using the full potential of the device, and I’d like to change that, but I wish there were more free apps, the app store seems a little bare. I also wish there was a way to browse it from my pc.

So I just checked by loading this doc into full word 2003 at work, and its actually the same length as it appears in word to go. I’ve been incredibly impressed with the whole dataviz suite, I’ll probably pick it up once my trial is over. I don’t know how useful powerpoint to go will be though, I have yet to require a presentation be prepared sans computer.

I’m also fairly impressed at the speee at which I can continue typing on the storm screen. So far I’ve been relatively error free, and can do about three sentences a minute, which isn’t bad since I’m composing and not transcribing something.

Post lunch I’ve been hit with a wave of lethargy, walking around the office in a semi-daze, waiting to be snapped back to reality by a coworker. These chairs are terrible. The lights hurt my eyes. I need some water. Might take a nap when I get home. Blargh.

I think this may turn out to be one of my longest blogs, which mostly validates using word to go on the BB and proves it as a viable platform for such things

This is the shirt I want to live my life in.

Today has gone really really well. Seriously one of the best days I’ve had in awhile. Woke up without being tired, decided to wear my kick-ass Oakey O-line shirt because I had execs to impress again. Got to the meeting prep session and went over my part a couple times in a dry-run. Without any specifics, we’ve come up with a way to revolutionize the processes we currently use. It’s a lot of change, but it’s very very good. In the break before we presented, I ran down to the cafeteria and found they had one of my favorite types of sandwich, which locked this in as being a pretty solid day. Egg salad for the win. Got back into our meeting room as people started filling in, director of this, VP of that, whatever. Went through our presentation, nailed all facets of it. I’m really excited to see what comes out of this last few weeks.

Left the meeting and got back to my desk, about 2 miles away from the meeting room. The campus is a lot bigger than I thought. Went over and filled in my Supervisor and Manager with what went on at the report out, then walked to lunch cause it’s a CRAZY nice day today. At this point I just felt fantastic. I don’t know what all came together, but I feel great. I think it’s the shirt.

Portable PCs

April 7th, 2009 Lunacite No comments

Another device has become part of my ever-growing electronic legion. After using my eeePC for a week, breaking it, fixing it, it’s finally at what I think is the final stable config. I’ve gotten quite a bit of utility out of it already, from a portable google mapper, to a chat terminal, to a pizza ordering kiosk, it’s been there for me. I put an 8gb SD card in for media storage, which should hold me for quite awhile, and let me just use the system drive for system things, which the size of it enforces. Fitting more than just utility apps onto a 4gb ssd is a bit tough, as I like toys with my linux installs. I think I’ll leave Compiz off this one.

With the arrival of a netbook, my old lappy (thanks lauren) has been re-tasked. It mostly watches tv/movies (which is do-able on the netbook but disappointing at 8.9″ of screen space) and runs windows-only or semi memory intensive apps when I’m not at my main PC. It’s also my only winXP install, so it VPNs me to my office when necessary as well, since the software is only compatable with XP.

I had originally planned this to include something about my other devices too, cause I have a ton….so I’ll save that for another post. New desktop tomorrow!

8 Hours, pah!

February 23rd, 2009 Lunacite No comments

I should have known that it was silly to think I’d actually get more sleep than I need. Tossed and turned till about 1am, when I finally managed to pass out. I guess that’s what I get for waking up at 11.

So, for both trips I managed to put about 15 minutes of total use on my DS and PSP combined. I used my Blackberry more for browsing & AIM, mostly because it was dark & I didn’t want to kill my driver’s nightvision. We made good time on the way over, left bellevue around 5:30 and made it into Spokane just after 9pm. From there I headed to Nate’s for general shenanigans, and wound up pounding on his door for a few minutes before calling and realizing he wasn’t even home. I hiked my way over to the China South and ordered some much needed food, when I realized how lucky I am to live so close to such stellar chinese food when I’m home. Not that China South’s Almond Chicken was BAD by any means (save the chow mein, if you could really call it that), but it didn’t change my very existence like eating at Greenwood does. Avery met up with us there, and we headed back to Nate’s to watch the Onion movie and play some good old video games. It was in this stage that my PSP got it’s most use, looking up command lists between rounds of Guilty Gear.

Saturday was challenging. I finally got my hair cut, which I’d been meaning to do for a long time, and it’s shorter now than it’s ever been before. Well, at least since I was born. After that we pretty much went straight to the memorial, and everything got a bit fuzzy. Aside from miscellaneous family drama the service went really well. I can only hope that when I pass I’ll have such nice things said about me by people I respect and admire. After the formal service itself we had a small reception in the back of the church where I caught up with family I hadn’t seen since the last major event (wedding, much funner). After repeating the same life update about 30 times, we headed from the church to Twigs for snacking and general drinking. I had a tasty Kahlua Pork sandwich and a Guiness, which made my day a lot better, and milled around a bit more. Photos from both of those should be on my Flickr soon in parts, damned upload limit. After the majority of relatives and friends had dwindled to a manageable 10, we went for dinner at Applebees where I consumed a burger that will probably be my biggest caloric intake till I get paid again. After adjourning there, I said my goodbyes and headed back to Nate’s to dick around until my ride was available. Alec swung by for a bit, which was cool, and we started watching Futurama when I passed out from a day that was longer than should have been possible.

Left Spokane around 12:30am with Graem driving, Lauren sleeping in the back, and me fading in and out of consciousness in the passenger seat. This trip took much longer than the drive over, with us arriving back in Bellevue at 6am, but I guess there was a break for a power nap by our stalwart driver. There were a couple apprehensive rumble strip hits, and getting routed off I-90 by staters didn’t help. Came home, called folks, passed out.

It was weird to have a Sunday after all that. Played a little wow, made some noodles, & started going through all my junk in the garage, which will turn into a multi-week project I’m sure. Mikey’s friend canceled on him, so we wound up making vegetable lasagna and watching Equilibrium since he hadn’t seen it. During the course of cleaning up the garage I unearthed some of my magic decks, and I’ve been cleaning those up so I can get a game or two in hopefully. Maybe I’ll teach Mikey how to play. Hopefully this week goes better for me than previous ones.
